Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is a landlocked central Himalayan Country in South Asia. It has a population of 26.4 million and is the 93rd largest country by area. Bordering China in the north & India in the south. east & west, it is the largest sovereign Himalayan State. Eligibility Criteria
- A. MBBS Course Durations: 4.5 Year+ 1Year Internship
- The candidate should have Passed 10+2 Science containing Physics, Chemistry and Biology with 50% aggregate in total marks or GPA 2.4 or secured the percentage equivalent to above eligibility in regards to the certificate level programs (e.g., A-Level) with different grading system.
- For Sri Lankan Students: Minimum “C” grades and “D” grades for international boards (EDEXCEL/Cambridge etc.), at the A” level or equivalent examination. Age should be at least 17 years by the last date of submission of application are eligible to apply in the MBBS or BDS course.
- There are 02 ways of admission in Nepal. One through Entrance Education conducted by Medical Education Commission & Another Direct admission through NEET score of current year.

NEET Score card if applying for direct admission based on NEET score. academy of health science, Kathmandu; Karnali Academy of Health Science, karnali; Nepalese Army Institute of Health Science, Kathmandu & Kathmandu University School of Medical Science, Kathmandu need to appear this entrance examination. All candidates should score at least 50 percentile in the entrance examination to qualify for being in the merit list. The allocation of seat & college will be done through “MATCHING” Mechanics as per the Merit and priority order selected by the candidate by Medical Education.
About Medical Education Commission (MEC)
As per provision of the National Medical Education Act 2075 B.S, in the context of the essence and spirit of the reports of the commission, committee and task force formed to improve medical education at different times, Medical Education Commission has been established to:
- Increase the investment of the state in the field of medical education.
- Develop medical education in line with the national needs of Nepal.
- Regulate medical education in an integrated and efficient way.
- Organize the work related to the establishment and operation of medical institutions.
- Maintain quality, professionalism, institutional accountability, geographical balance, and social justice in medical education.
- Ensure equal access of all students including the deprived.
Programs:
- Medical colleges in Nepal provide a four & a half years MBBS degree program in all the preclinical subjects and selected clinical subjects. The four and a half years MBBS course is divided into 9 semesters of 6 months each. Upon successful completion of the course, students will undergo a 1-year compulsory residential rotating internship. The medium of instruction is English.
- MBBS Curriculum-Preclinical (Semesters I-IV) The first and second years of instruction cover integrated Preclinical Sciences, Community Medicine, Introduction to clinical Medicine and Medical Informatics. Preclinical Science includes Anatomy, Microbiology, Pathology, & Pharmacology & Physiology. These subjects are taught and integrated manner and are incorporated into Community Medicine and introduction to clinical Medicine. Students gain clinical knowledge and problem-solving skills. Medical informatics is integrated to provide computer expertise relevant to medical education. At the end of the first year and second year there are university examinations on each of the above subjects. A student must complete all subjects of the practical science- first year MBBS within three from the date of admission & second year within four from the date of admission. A student is required to pass all the preclinical subjects before he/she is allowed to be promoted to the clinical sciences
- (Semester V) Clinical Sciences [Semester V-IX] Clinical sciences include the subjects of forensic medicine. Community Medicine, Ophthalmology {ENT} Medicine & Allied Subjects, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiology, Emergency Medicine & More], Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and other allied medical and surgical specialties & sub-specialties. The third-year MBBS university examinations in Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine Ophthalmology are held at the end of the seventh semester. A student cannot be admitted to the ninth semester until he/she has passed all four subjects. At the end of nine semesters are the final MBBS university examinations in Medicine and Allied Subjects, Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Paediatrics.
Evaluation
- A system of continuous evaluation is followed through fortnightly tests semester exams end-posting evaluations, seminars & problem-based learning sessions. The continuous evaluation system has helped to achieve excellent results in university examinations.
- Teaching Methodology: The teaching program in preclinical consists of Didactic Classroom lectures Practical’ s PBLs/Seminar Community/Hospital visits Fortnightly, academic time tables are prepared, giving details of the teaching program with topics to be covered. These are put up well in advance to support the integrated approach, seminars and PBLs are conducted every fortnight on important diseases/syndromes. This gives the preclinical students a better clinical orientation of the systems being taught. Concurrent evaluation is done by fortnightly test, viva – voce, seminars and PBLs Semester examinations are held at the end of each 5 months. The teaching program in Clinical Sciences consists of:
- Clinical/ Practical training in hospitals, wards /Community visits/Field training camp
- Symposia/Seminar Clinical meeting/Faculty talks/Guest Lectures
- The above teaching sessions take an average of forty- two hours/week, out of which there are 12 didactic lectures per week.
- The stress is mainly on Clinical Practical training. The students are Periodically Assessed by conducting and posting clinical exams (Clinical and Viva), mid-Semester Exams and end- semester exams.
Internship. - One Year of rotating internship is compulsory. The Kathmandu University and Nepal Medical Council have approved six different schemes for internship for student of different countries, as per the requirements of their medical council. Students do their internships in Nepal, India, Sri-Lanka, Australia, USA, UK, and South Africa. Internship rules are subject to change as per the rules of medical council of Nepal.
